Getting Ready for the Mountains of Peru

One of the most exciting parts of traveling to Peru is visiting places high in the Andes Mountains, including Cusco and Machu Picchu. The mountains are beautiful, breathtaking, and unlike anything many of us have experienced before!

Because these places are so high above sea level, the air contains a little less oxygen than we are used to at home. This is completely normal, but it can make some people feel tired, thirsty, nauseous or short of breath while their bodies adjust.

Think of it this way:
Your body is simply learning a new rhythm for the mountains.

Some travelers may notice:

  • Mild headaches
  • Feeling extra tired
  • Dry lips or dry nose
  • Getting out of breath more quickly when walking uphill or climbing stairs
  • Wanting to sleep more
  • possible nausea

The good news is that most people adjust very well within a day or two, especially if they take care of themselves.

Mountain Tips for Feeling Your Best

Here are a few easy ways to help your body adjust to the altitude:

* Drink lots of water
The mountain air is very dry, so staying hydrated is extremely important. We are acclimated to high humidity so we may feel it more intensely than others.

* Use electrolyte packets
These help your body replace important minerals while traveling and walking.

* Slow and steady wins the race
You do not need to rush! Walking slowly at first actually helps your body adapt better.

* Eat snacks and regular meals
Even if you are not very hungry, your body still needs fuel and energy.

*Get plenty of sleep
Rest helps your body adjust naturally.

* Wear sunscreen and lip balm
The sun is much stronger at high elevations.

*Try coca tea if offered
Many hotels in Peru offer traditional coca tea, which local people have used for generations to help with altitude adjustment.

Most importantly:
Altitude is not something to fear, it is simply something to respect. Traveling to the mountains is part of the adventure, and learning how our bodies adapt to new environments is actually pretty amazing.

Soon enough, your body catches up and then you get to enjoy one of the most incredible places on Earth.

As you can see, your EF tour includes visits to the places you’ve learned about in school. That’s a given. But it’s so much more than that. Immersing yourself in new cultures— surrounded by the people, the language, the food, the way of life—creates inspirational moments that can’t be listed in an itinerary. They can only be experienced.

And the experience begins long before you get your passport stamped and meet your Tour Director in your arrival city. It begins the moment you decide to go. Whether it’s connecting with other travelers on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, or delving deeper into your destinations with our online learning platform, weShare, the excitement will hit you long before you pack your suitcase.

When your group arrives abroad, everything is taken care of so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Your full-time Tour Director is with your group around the clock, handling local transportation, hotels and meals while also providing their own insight into the local history and culture. Expert local guides will lead your group on sightseeing tours, providing detailed views of history, art, architecture or anything you may have a question about.

When your journey is over and you’re unpacking your suitcase at home, you’ll realize the benefits of your life-changing experience do not end. They have just begun.

What you’ll experience on your tour

Day 1: Fly overnight to Italy

Day 2: Rome

– Meet your Tour Director at the airport in
Rome, a city that integrates its past into the present better than any other. During your stay, explore the world’s most famous arena, the Colosseum, where you can almost hear the stamping feet of the crowds gathered for gladiatorial combat. Nearby, the Roman Forum marks the former heart of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar gave many of his great political speeches there. On your visit to the Vatican City, marvel at Michelangelo’s breathtaking ceiling in the Sistine Chapel and look out for the colorful uniforms of the Swiss Guard, protectors of the Vatican City. Before you say “arrivederci,” toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return trip to the Eternal City.

Located in the Campania region, Sorrento’s idyllic setting marks the starting point of the famed Amalfi Drive. This picturesque stretch of road provides stunning cliff-side views of the Tyrrhenian Sea as it winds 43 miles to Salerno. Sorrento offers a variety of diversions: you can venture to the fragrant lemon groves, splash around in the bay’s bright blue waters or just unwind at a café with a cup of cappuccino or a scoop of gelato.

Snap a picture of the Presidential Guard in traditional costume, then pass the stadium that hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896. Carry on packing!

Carry on packing!

With the increase in bag fees,  carry on travel has become popular.  In our case,  our tour is so incredibly busy that managing a full sized bag is not a good idea.  But we are travelling during the summer, so lighter clothes are a must.  That alone is a wonderful starting point.  But don't dispair!  There is no end to the helpful resources avaiable to us! Just look below!

Theres ALWAYS an APP for that!

Safety First

Protect Yourself Against Theft Of Your Devices & Data

Travelling will take you to busy places, some of them more notorious for crime than others. Regardless of the area, as a traveller you are a prime target. There are several things you can do to protect yourself against device theft or to help in the aftermath:

  • Carry your devices near your body.
  • Don’t get too distracted when using tablets or phones in public spaces.
  • Purchase insurance for your devices (and make sure you are covered internationally and for potential work usage).
  • Keep your devices locked when not in use. You might also consider the risks of leaving your applications logged in on your device.
  • Don’t log into sensitive accounts while using public Wi-Fi.
  • Back up your devices before you leave and when staying with friends while travelling.
  • Keep back-ups on-the-go by syncing with web storage like Dropbox or Box.
  • Install applications to help you retrieve a lost phone or tablet – or to delete the data remotely (for iPads, enable the “Find This iPad” feature before you go).
